While Rourkela's modern identity is intertwined with steel, its history stretches further. Though declared an urban area in 1931, it remained relatively untouched until the mid-20th century. The turning point came in 1953 when the decision to establish a significant steel plant was made. This project, a collaboration with Germany, led to the rapid development of Rourkela as an important industrial centre.  The displacement of over 14,000 residents to set up the plant is also a part of this history.

There are a few theories about the origin of the name "Rourkela." One theory suggests it comes from the Odia words "Rour", meaning "sun", and "Kela", meaning "land," translating to "Land of the Sun." Another theory suggests it derives from the abundance of "Rohu" fish in the city's rivers.

Hot Summers (March to June):  Summer is the dominant season in Rourkela.  May is the hottest month, with average highs reaching around 32.5°C (90.5°F).  Throughout the summer, expect hot days with highs exceeding 30°C (86°F) and lows hovering around 25°C (77°F).

Pleasant Winters (December to February):  Winter offers a welcome respite from the summer heat. January is the coolest month, with average lows dipping to around 19.3°C (66.7°F).  Generally, winter days are pleasant with highs in the mid-20s°C (70s°F) and lows dropping to around 15°C (59°F).

Rainfall: Rourkela receives a good amount of rainfall throughout the year, with a distinct peak during the monsoon seasons:

Southwest Monsoon (June to September):  This is the primary monsoon season, bringing the majority of Rourkela's annual rainfall, averaging around 1389 mm (54.7 inches).  Expect heavy showers and high humidity during this period.

Retreating Northeast Monsoon (December – January):  This weaker monsoon brings some additional rainfall, contributing to the overall precipitation.
